BORGO SAN DALMAZZO, Italy, May 29 - Italy's Marco Pantani recaptured the overall lead in the Giro d'Italia on Saturday after finishing second to compatriot Paolo Savoldelli on the 14th stage.

After 187 kms and two testing mountain climbs, Savoldelli came home one minute and 47 seconds clear of Pantani.

Savoldelli is now Pantani's chief rival for the leader's pink jersey, with a deficit of 53 seconds.

Savoldelli chased over the 22 km climb up the 2,511 metre Colle Fauniera, to join the pursuit of the leaders.

The Italian then broke free of a chasing group, including previous Giro winners Pantani and Ivan Gotti of Italy, to overhaul the lone leader Italian Gabriele Missaglia, before the summit of the second mountain.

Gotti, who finished fourth behind Spain's Daniel Clavero, is third overall, 1:21 behind Pantani.

Frenchman Laurent Jalabert, race leader for the last five days, finished 3:28 after Savoldelli in a group led home by another Frenchman, Richard Virenque.
