Stage 1 Quaranta upstages Giro establishment
By Mike Price
MODICA, Sicily, May 15 - Ivan
Quaranta took the favorites by surprise with victory in the opening stage of the Giro
d'Italia on Saturday.
On a day when Italy expected Mario Cipollini to record his 26th Giro stage success, the
big Tuscan was upstaged by his compatriot in a sprint finish to the 175 km leg from
Agrigento.
A fight to the finish was anticipated between Cipollini and in-form Dutchman Jeroen
Blijlevens, but Quaranta outflanked them after a tricky downhill approach to the chequered
flag.
He led over the final 150 metres, resisting a late lunge that brought Blijlevens almost
level as Cipollini fought hard for third place.
