Amazing Maze

Sunday, November 04, 2018

A little history: These routes go back before my time with the club, but I’m told that at one time,  the “maze” portion of the ride in Villa Park was actually a challenge. The streets were very convoluted and the route sheets back then didn’t have mileage on them – just rights and lefts. The club also handed out route sheets with differing trips through the maze area so you couldn’t follow other riders – they may have had a different route. I was told riders would get lost. But since then, Villa Park has straightened out some of the streets, we now include mileage on the route sheets and everyone gets the same route. Add to that the modern usage of Garmin computers and it’s hard to imagine anyone getting lost now.  But we still ride through Villa Park because it’s got some nice homes to look at. Of course there is more to these routes than the maze. All routes head to the World’s Best Hamburger in Yorba Linda for lunch. The Long goes a roundabout way via Santiago Canyon while the other routes go more directly. On the return, the medium and the long head into the Anaheim Hills while the short takes an easier and more direct route. It is on the return that all routes still do the “maze” portion in Villa Park. We have often done this ride in December when the homes in Villa Park are decorated for the holidays. We are probably too early for that, but they may still have Halloween decorations up START:  PINE TREE PARK in TUSTIN.  From Santa Ana Frwy (I-5) in Tustin, off and east on Redhill, L- Bryan one block to park. (Long 66 mi and 3900 ft, Medium 57 mi and 2000 ft, Short 35 mi and 800 ft)
