Bike Trails Galore

Sunday, November 25, 2018

Today the long will ride 4 different bike trails (San Gabriel, Rio Hondo, LA River and Long Beach Bike Path). I’m not sure if 4 qualifies for the word “galore.” If I went to a new bike shop and told you they had bikes galore, wouldn’t you expect they had more than 4 bikes? But I suppose the word is relative. In southern California 4 is a good number of bike trails in one ride.  For the long, we start with the San Gabriel River trail up to the Santa Fe Dam. Then its the Rio Hondo south to the LA River Trail and the Long Beach Bike Path over to Seal Beach for lunch. Then it’s the San Gabriel Trail again back to the start. The medium is much the same, except it does not go all the way to the Santa Fe Dam. The short is similar to the medium except that it doesn’t go all the way south to Long Beach. It is pleasant riding, with almost no hills. It’s easier to talk to your companions on bike trails. So how can you go wrong? You will have fun galore. START:  WILDERNESS PARK in Downey.  From the Santa Ana Frwy (I-5) South bound, take the Florence Exit (which is actually off the transition lanes between the 5 and the 605), cross Florence and then go R on Little Lake Rd to park.  Park in lot or on the street (lot sometimes fills early). (long 69 mi and 1400 ft, Medium 52 mi and 1000 ft, Short 37 mi and 600 ft)
