Apple Blossom Time

Sunday, November 18, 2018

I really enjoy this ride but we only run it about once every two years because it’s a long drive out to the start in Redlands. But it really is worth the drive. The routes head up to the apple growing area of Oak Glen. It’s fall, so technically, this ride should be called “Apple Picking Time” but that’s perfect. It’s Thanksgiving week and maybe you are thinking of making some apple pies for the holiday and want to use fresh apples. You can buy them (or even pick them yourself maybe) on this ride. Don’t worry about carrying them back to the start – it’s almost all downhill on the way back. All but the short route go up to Oak Glen for lunch (and maybe apples). As I mentioned, one nice thing about these routes is that its almost all uphill to lunch and then almost all downhill on the way back. The Medium heads straight up to Oak Glen while both Longs take a roundabout way through Beaumont. The Short route simply tours the Redlands area. The holiday may bring out the tourists and the restaurants may be busy, but in the past we have had a late lunch down the hill. Really try and make this one. You wont regret it. It is a tough climb (it is one of the climbs on annual Breathless Agony ride) but the routes are not long so you can take your time and rest when you need it. And remember – it is almost all downhill after lunch. START: SYLVAN PARK in Redlands  Go east on San Bernardino Frwy (10) to Redlands, off and left on University.  Left on narrow road just after crossing RR tracks into park. (Long 56 mi and 4900 ft, Alternate Long 43 mi and 3800 ft,  Medium 37 mi and 3800 ft, Short 29 mi and 1600 ft)
