Alhambra and Bikeway

Sunday, September 03, 2017

August is over and so our month of rides in the South Bay has ended. Today we head a little inland to start our rides from Alhambra. On average, temperatures begin to decline in September, so, in theory we should be ok. But, as we all know, September is the kind of month that sometimes throws theory right out the window. Well, I thought of that for today’s rides. Today, you can just select your route based on the temperature. All routes are together for the first 27 miles as we ride up the Rio Hondo bike trail and head to Pasadena for lunch. I figure that even on a hot day, we can ride 27 miles in the cool of the morning. If it’s really a hot day, after lunch, the short is only a short 3 miles back to the start. If it is not too hot by lunch, but you are worried it will get hot later in the afternoon, you can opt for the medium route which adds a small loop before heading back. If the day is pleasant (or you think you can tolerate the heat) there is always the long route. The long lengthens the loop after lunch taking you all the way to La Canada and does some interesting climbing in the hills above the Rose Bowl. So don’t fear the weather. You don’t have to pick your route until lunch. Come out and kick off your autumn riding early. START:  ALHAMBRA PARK.  From San Bernardino Frwy (I-10), off and North on Fremont, R – Alhambra Rd, R – Raymond to Park. (Long 54 mi and 2200 ft, Medium 45 mi and 1600 ft, Short 30 mi and 1000 ft)
